Salt and Light

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16 NASB)

Almost every kitchen table in the US is set with a salt shaker on it. And just about everyone uses salt on their food even if only in small amounts.
Salt makes food taste so much better. Have you ever eaten a potato without any salt?
Salt is also a component in preserving food. Many times it helps to keep food from spoiling.

And almost every Living room in the US has end tables with lamps on them. Each of us like to have light that is beneficial to our task at hand. Maybe it's low light while watching TV or a brighter light if you are looking for something in the room.
Light does so much for us in our daily lives.

But you never hear anyone get up from the table, after eating a wonderful meal and say, "that was the best salt I ever ate. Didn't you just love that salt?"
In the same way, you never hear anyone say about someone's home, "I just love the way that light was shining, wasn't it beautiful?"

The salt and the light although both very important, and both have a great influence over their environment seldom get noticed unless they aren't there.

Jesus tells us that we are salt and light. Our influence should be reaching and falling on to others around us. Do not "hide" Jesus when you are at your job, at your school, at the store, on the sidewalk, at the sporting events, in the restaurant or wherever life takes you.
Be the salt, be the light.
